This is the story of Peter, one of our long-term customers in Port Noarlunga, South Australia, and how his energy setup went from a dated system struggling to keep up, to a fully battery-backed solar powerhouse with credits on every bill.
The Starting Point: Premium Feed-in Tariff, But Still High Bills
Peter had been a solar customer since before 2011 — back when the South Australian government’s Premium Feed-in Tariff (PFiT) was available. Under that scheme, he was exporting solar energy back to the grid at a generous rate, which was great at the time. But his 1.5kW system was tiny by today’s standards, and despite the attractive export rate, his power bills were still higher than he’d like.
By late 2022, the old system had started developing issues. Rather than repair an ageing setup that was never going to deliver the savings he wanted, Peter got in touch with us to talk through his options.
Stage 1 (December 2022): A Proper Solar Upgrade in Port Noarlunga
We started by replacing the old system with a modern 6.6kW solar system paired with a 5kW Goodwe inverter. For most Adelaide households, a system this size is the sweet spot — enough generation to cover daytime usage and push a meaningful amount back to the grid.
Peter noticed the difference almost immediately. His bills dropped noticeably, and he was genuinely happy with the upgrade.
Stage 2 (Late 2025): Adding Battery Storage with the Federal Battery Rebate
By mid-2025, the Federal battery rebate had become available — a government scheme designed to make home battery storage more accessible for Australian households. Peter was already thinking about adding a battery, and the rebate made the decision easy.
There was also a practical reason to upgrade again. Peter had started spending more time at home, and had added some higher-powered appliances to the mix. As a result, his bills had slowly started creeping back up. More usage during the day meant more draw from the grid on cloudy days or in the evenings.
We came back and swapped out the Goodwe inverter for a 5kW Goodwe EHB hybrid inverter, then paired it with a 19.2kWh battery. That’s a serious amount of storage — enough to cover most households through the night and well into the next morning, even if solar generation is minimal.
The Result: No More Power Bills
Peter’s power bills have been completely eliminated.
Not just reduced — gone. He’s now seeing credits on his bills larger than anything he experienced across 17+ years of having solar. The combination of a well-sized solar system and substantial battery storage means he’s generating more than enough during the day, storing what he doesn’t use, and drawing from the battery through the evening rather than paying peak grid rates.
For a home in the southern suburbs of Adelaide, where sunny days are plentiful for most of the year, a setup like this is incredibly effective.
